Split vs. Packaged HVAC Systems: Which Fits Your Property?

June 16, 2025

← All articles

Most people never choose between split and packaged systems - their building chose for them years ago. But at replacement time, it’s worth understanding what each design means for cost, lifespan, and service.

The basic difference

A split system divides the work: condenser outside, evaporator coil and air handler (or furnace) inside. A packaged unit puts everything in one cabinet, usually on the roof or a ground slab, connected straight into the ductwork.

Where splits win

  • Lifespan: the indoor half lives indoors, protected from sun and dust
  • Efficiency ceiling: the highest-efficiency residential equipment is mostly split-format
  • Quiet: the noisy parts sit outside, away from living space

For most houses with an existing furnace closet or attic air handler, a split replacement is the natural call.

Where packaged units win

  • Space: no indoor equipment footprint at all - valuable in homes without a furnace closet and essential for many commercial layouts
  • Service access: everything’s in one place (a mixed blessing on a 110° roof)
  • Simplicity: one cabinet, one crane set, straightforward replacement

Rooftop packaged units are the standard for shops, offices, and light industrial space, and we install and service both formats weekly.

The desert wrinkle

Packaged units live entirely outdoors, taking sun and dust year-round - placement, shading, and a maintenance schedule matter even more than usual. A neglected rooftop unit ages in dog years out here.
