Getting Your AC Ready Before the High Desert Heat Hits

May 19, 2026

← All articles

Every June, the first real heat wave brings a wave of no-cooling calls - and most of them trace back to problems that were quietly building all spring. Here’s what to look at before the thermometer does it for you.

1. Swap the filter

A clogged filter is the cheapest problem your system can have and the most common one we find. In dusty High Desert conditions, check it monthly during cooling season.

2. Clear the outdoor unit

Tumbleweeds, dust, and yard debris choke the condenser coil. Give the unit two feet of clearance and rinse the fins gently with a hose (power off first).

3. Listen on startup

Grinding, clicking, or a hum that doesn’t turn into a running fan are all early warnings. Catching a weak capacitor in May is a quick visit; catching it in July is a hot house and an emergency call.

4. Check your vents

Walk the house and make sure supply vents are open and unblocked. Closing vents to “save energy” actually raises duct pressure and can hurt efficiency.

5. Book a tune-up

A professional tune-up checks refrigerant charge, electrical connections, and airflow - the things you can’t see from the outside. Members of our maintenance plan get priority scheduling when the rush hits.
